Headaches are a common symptom among people of all ages. Most headaches are benign and self-limited. However, some headaches indicate serious and even emergent medical conditions. Thus, all clinicians must be competent to differentiate benign from potentially life-threatening headaches. Additionally, headaches with a benign origin can either be treated directly by a primary care clinician, such as tension headaches, or require referral, such as to an optometrist for eye-strain headaches.
This course reviews headache presentations and etiologies, including the red flags suggesting life-threatening headaches, and assessments and treatments, including for headaches occurring during pregnancy and lactation.
