Jack Krasuski, MD

Dr. Jack Krasuski is currently the Founder with American Physician Institute for Advanced Professional Studies. Dr. Krasuski spent three years as a Senior Staff Fellow at the National Institute on Aging, NIH, where he did research in the neuroimaging of dementing disorders. Currently, he spends most of his time lecturing to thousands of physicians yearly on psychiatric topics. He is known for his ability to clearly explain complex and little understood topics.

Karen Hartwell, MD

Dr. Karen Hartwell is an Associate Professor in the Addiction Sciences Division in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Hartwell has extensive clinical experience as a general and addiction psychiatrist in the treatment of substance use disorders with/without comorbid psychiatric disorders. She was the Medical Director of the Substance Treatment and Recovery Program at the Ralph H Johnson VAMC until 2019 and treated veterans with multiple substance use disorders including opioids, alcohol, and stimulants, among others.

She is now leading several initiatives to address the opioid epidemic including becoming the medical director of Medical University of South Carolina’s Project ECHO Opioid Use Disorder. Dr. Hartwell in unusual in that she made a mid-life career change and returned to academics to complete a fellowship in addiction psychiatry to better address the substance use disorders that commonly co-occur with psychiatric disorders. Her research career has focused on understanding the underlying neurobiology and improving treatment outcomes. She has collaborated on variety of research studies involving opioids, cocaine, cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders. She has been involved multiple clinical trials including multisite trials, ranging from Phase 2 to Phase 4, investigating a variety of pharmacotherapeutic agents and TMS.

Ximena Sanchez-Samper, MD

Dr. Ximena Sanchez-Samper is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist. Dr. Sanchez-Samper trained at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and completed her addictions fellowship through Massachusetts General Hospital in 2004. After working with adolescents and young adults (and their families) with substance use disorders at Children’s Hospital Boston for many years, she transferred to McLean Hospital where she was the Medical Director at one of one of their residential programs.

Dr. Sanchez-Samper is an advocate of incorporating Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) into the comprehensive care of patients struggling with alcohol and opioid use disorders and has been prescribing Buprenorphine (Suboxone) since obtaining her waiver in 2003. She co-authored both a book chapter (“Opioid Use by Adolescents,” Handbook of Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Dependence, 2011) and published an article in a peer review journal (“Adolescent Substance Abuse”, General Considerations, Pediatrics in Review, 2009) addressing the needs of patients struggling with addiction and its aftermath. Dr. Sanchez-Samper is an instructor at Harvard Medical School and enjoys lecturing nationwide on substance use disorder identification, diagnosis, and treatment.

Dr. Kevin M. Gray is Professor and Director of Addiction Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Assistant Vice President for Advancing Research Partnerships at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Scott Fishman, MD

Scott M. Fishman is professor, chief of the division of pain medicine and executive vice chair for the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at UC Davis and director for the UC Davis Center for Advancing Pain Relief.

An internationally recognized expert on pain and pain management, Fishman has served in numerous leadership roles with the goal to alleviate pain. Such roles include past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, past chairman of the board of directors of the American Pain Foundation, and past board member for the American Pain Society. He is the immediate past chair and a current member of the Pain Care Coalition of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Pain Society and Academy of Pain Medicine. He advocates for safe use of pain medicines with consumers and lawmakers and also lectures on a wide variety of topics related to pain. Fishman has testified before several state legislatures as well as U.S. Congress. He serves as a consultant for various federal agencies, sits on a panel for the American Academy of Medicine and provide expert interviews for the media, including appearances on the “Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” and “The PBS News Hour.”
